Five Fun Things on Friday (3-26-10) – Kalyn’s Kitchen

tomato seeds growingIt’s Friday, the day when I like to share fun things I’ve found around the web and sometimes give a peek into what I’ve been doing at my house as well. Keep reading to hear about the fun and find out what I’m trying to grow in this photo. Of course, you can never have too much fun, so if you spotted something fun this week somewhere online, please share with a link in the comments!

Fun Thing #1: Thanks to Nate for the Heirloom Tomato Seeds!

Last fall I wrote about my lunch at Chez Panisse, especially the heirloom tomato salad that included Pink Berkeley Tie Dye Tomatoes. I heard from Nate of House of Annie who is also an heirloom tomato fan, who told me he had some heirloom tomato seeds he’d send me in the spring. Sure enough, a package came in the mail with Berkeley Tie Dye, Pink Berkeley Tie Dye, and Beauty King heirloom seeds. (Thanks Nate!) I’ve had such luck finding heirloom tomato plants in Utah that this is my very first time growing tomatoes from seeds, but as you can see in the photo above, they’re starting to sprout. I do have nice sunny windows in the new office, so I’m hoping I can nurture them along until May when it’s time to plant outdoors.

Fun Thing #2: BizyMoms Interviews Me About My Blog and the South Beach Diet!

If you want to learn more about how I got started blogging my South Beach Diet friendly recipes, read the interview with me about Healthy Tasty Food at BizyMoms.com. As you see, I’m sold on the glycemic index as a way of managing my weight, and definitely plan to keep blogging about it for a long time!

Fun Thing #3: I Can’t Wait to Try Chickpea Fries!

When I had dinner at Frances with my friends Mary and Jacque, one of the dishes we all loved were the chickpea fritters, so when I saw this recipe for Chickpea Fries on Notes From a Vegan Feast Kitchen, I was definitely intrigued. I’m guessing the chickpea fritters are deep fried while Bryanna’s Chickpea Fries are pan-fried, but they look very similar and I can’t wait to try this recipe.

Fun Thing #4: Hummus Recipes from Bloggers on ReadersDigest.com!

Utah is starting to get quite an abundance of food bloggers, and it’s been fun meeting some of them in person. I’ve enjoyed every Utah blogger I’ve met, but the one who has done nice things for me over and over is Dara from Cookin’ Canuck, and I was thrilled when Cookin’ Canuck was featured on BlogHer.com! I’m amazed at how skillfully Dara manages to combine a job, two adorable kids, and a food blog, so if you’re not familiar with her blog, check out this interview and take a look at her site.

Now it’s your turn to share fun things; if you’ve spotted any this week please share in the comments.    If you need just a little more Friday Fun, you can use the label for Five Fun Things on Friday to see fun things I’ve shared on other Fridays!
